2/2/16; tony payan: drug trafficking, organized crime, and the u. s. -mexican border. There used to be drugs / opiates at that time. The opium poppy (the flower) is the source of heroine today. These drugs were used by people in the 1800"s. It was sometimes judged as a religious issue. The racial layer of this story is also very important. The religious layer of this country cannot be excluded from the debate on drugs. In the 1880s many asians came to the united states to work on railroads. Many of them were accustomed to smoking opiates. By the 1890s there were racial components to drugs. At that time, though, drugs were not illegal. The non-chinese non-mexican americans at that time were also addicted to drugs but not the same as these different cultures. Even if we were to eliminate cocaine, heroin, marijuana, there are still the legal drugs that are being abused (most drug abuse lies here)
