In the beginning of photography, all photographs were monochromatic or in grayscale. As photography progressed, many individuals continued to use black and white photography for artistic purposes. As we spend our lives looking at the world through eyes that see color, black and white photography can take some practice. A photograph that might not work well in color may be a great black and white photograph. Learning to make those distinctions will improve the pictures that you take. Contrast becomes an important element in black and white photography. Contrast is simply the difference between light and dark, between light and shadows, between white and black. When we take a colorful scene and turn it into a black and white photograph, the light colors of the scene will become highlights and the dark colors will become dark tones. The differences between the highlights and dark tones are called tonal contrast.
