The element you choose has to have a strong visual interest and be appropriate for your material and audience. This is how you visually guide the reader through the hierarchy of your document. A strong focal point, simplicity, graphic elements that move your eye along, size relationships and visually interesting white space. Clutter (lack of white space), too many focal points, too much text/too many graphics the same size and similar spacing between all elements. White (or negative) space is a very important design element! To see white space in a document, squint your eyes and look at it or hold it upside down. you will see shapes, not details.
