Alfred russel wallace-sent darwin a manuscript that made him stop what he was doing which made him write an abstract (origin of the species) Wrote in certain way to respect his religion. Species can change but always moving towards perfection. Belief that the world is not changing. Belief in essentialism-there isn"t really any individual variation, everything had a unique essence, things didn"t really change, essence will resist change. Population-emphasizes unique of species, advancing individuals as whole. Vertical (changes in time dimension) vs horizontal (space) Lamarck-always on vertical, new species created spontaneously, evolution on preceding in one direction, complexity does not increase. Darwin-always on horizontal, origin of initial stage species, species are connected.
