Believed to be christ (messiah, savior) by his followers (thus called christians ) Not much is known about life of yeshua, jewish rabbi born c. 3 bce. What we do know is culled from gospel writings & other non-canonical fragments. Common anecdote: at 12 years old he spent time conversing on jewish law with rabbis (infancy gospel of thomas) Public life begins with baptism by john the baptist c. 30 years old. Escapes to the wilderness for spiritual retreat. Joined by satan who attempts to tempt him, all of which jesus refuses. Returns to public life in town of capernaum-joining his mother, mary & his other family members. Attends synagogue & reads from torah, proclaiming that he has come to fulfill the prophecies of the hebrew bible. Recruits male disciples & travels around working miracles & teaching how to apply.
