REL 10200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: 613 Commandments, Israelites, Ketuvim
Document Summary
After the destruction of the temple in jerusalem, a void was created in daily jewish life. Rabbis were drawn from schools of education, set training regiments to create leaders were established. No longer were leaders chosen because of hereditary claims to power. Ritual performance moved from the temple to the synagogue & to individual dinner tables of jews. Every aspect of daily life became an opportunity to embody the covenant with god. Place of gathering for jews (much like a church of mosque) where prayers & other community services are carried out. Developed in captivity (c. 586 bce) but became especially integral in 70 ce. Creation: god created the universe & everything in it. God & humanity (specifically between god & jewish people) Redemption: israelites were saved from bondage in egypt (in order to experience revelation) Revelation: god gave his 613 mitzvot as a standard for conduct & behavior.
