Polytheism rejected by romans and monotheism became more popular. Early christian art in rome emphasized christ"s divinity and exemplary as a teacher and miracle worker, not his suffering and death (crucifixion). Roman empire was home to a diverse population: social, ethnic, racial, linguistic, and religious backgrounds. This multicultural character of roman society became only more pronounced as the romans expanded their territory. Dura-europos (syria) and jewish art (end of 3rd century) Persians conquered 256 and that marks end of dura-europos. Jewish, christians, and paegan artists all had the same style of art in the third century. It"s hard to tell them apart aside from location. Synagogue paintings: mural paintings depicting episodes from the sacred. Jewish torah niche (the scroll containing the pentateuch, the first 5 books of the hebrew scriptures). Tend to lack shadows, volume, and stand in frontal rows. Narrative (from old testament) combined with iconic scenes (frontal looking figures).
