A pioneer of modern art in europe and the first woman to paint a full length nude self portrait, paula modersohn becker favored simple forms and complex textures created by scratching into sculpted paint on canvas: portrait taken into consideration though, there is shading, careful outlines of breasts and facial details, modersohn becker"s nude self portrait, painted just prior to her death, had no precedent male or female and celebrated the female body in a straightforward, unembellished manner. We can tell what objects are by their location and color, and all the brushstrokes are very similar: compared to paul cezanne"s mont sainte victoire. interested in how to depict an entire mountain, while derain is interested in depicting a concept, the field in the foreground, the trees and the foothills are created in large strokes of bright green, blue, mauve and pink; which suggest a highly charged encounter with the natural world.
