Authority is portrayed through art in both, grandeur and size of monuments. What they mean is significant in showing authority towards both, the people as well as warring tribes. Thesis: art in the form of art & public monuments were used to show. Power of the ruler through dominance & suppression of freedom. All have some sort of agenda i. e. to show the amount of power that they had and to show legitimacy through either divine sanction or association with the divine. All had a form of authority over the people they ruled which they showed by making expensive art. Moved form sheer size and beauty towards a more religious impact. Religion showed them as both, a religious leader, and erecting monuments showed them as a political leader. Art was used instead of writing as a lot of the population were illiterate, art and pictures is all they understood.
