Document Summary

Lecture 15 - gene expression: relationship between genes and proteins, experimental evidence. Genes are responsible for phenotypes through enzymes. Mendel"s principles of heredity applies to humans! Each gene dictates production of a specific enzyme. Now know that all proteins are enzymes one gene one protein (actually a polyptetide) Francis crick (1956) proposed the central dogma. Transcription: information in dna used to synthesize messenger rna (mrna) Translation: ribosome uses mrna to synthesize a polypeptide. Transcription and translation occur in all organisms. In prokaryotes translation begins before transcription has finished. In eukaryotes nuclear envelope + rna processing: rna composition and types. Rna = ribonucleic acid uracil (u) = pyrimidine. Mrna - messenger rna encodes an entire protein. Rrna - ribosomal rna structural part of a ribosome trna - transfer rna carry individual amino acids to ribosome during translation: genetic code - codons: triplets of nucleotides. Proteins = 20 possible amino acids & peptide bonds. Codon = mrna 3 nucleotides = triplet codes.
