Process by which one specie splits into two or more species. Resulting species share many characteristics because descended from common ancestor (ca) Group of populations whose members have potential to interbreed in mature and produce viable fertile offspring. Does not apply to species that reproduce asexually. Ecological niche - how members of specie interact with living and nonliving components of environment. Ii. i. ii. iii. iv. i. ii. i. Mechanism - prevent members from different species from interbreeding. Prevent formation of hybrids (offspring that results from interspecific mating) Spatially isolation - species live in same geographic area, but live and breed in iii. iv. v. Ex: dendrobium orchid - live in rain forest, different species do not cross pollinate because they flower on different days + stay open for only one day. Behavioral isolation - behaviors unique to a species. Fireflies - males blink in specie specific pattern. I, ii, and iii prevent mating attempts (no fertilization)
