Document Summary
An action carried out by muscles under control of nervous system. Set of adaptations that equip animal for survival in specific environment. Expected that animals behave in ways that maximize fitness. Reproduce in spring--> more offspring survive to adulthood. Study of ecological and evolutionary bases of behavior. Understanding any behavior requires answering the 4 questions. Results in movement through different types of environments. Can track position relative to sun/stars, magnetic field. Can adjust circadian clock to maintain 24-hour rhythm. Many behaviors occur at regular intervals- day season year. Circadian rhythms: occur over course of a day. Proximate cause is usually exogenous: day length->hormonal changes. Transmission & reception of mutually recognizable signals from one animal to another. Often plays a role in proximate causation--> triggers behavior. Fast, high info density, indicates position of sender. Scent marking; many species use urine or feces, other have specific glands. Often more than 1 type of signal used.
