His work is now the foundation for the science of genetics. Mendel used the scientific approach to identify 2 laws of inheritance. He discovered the basic principles of heredity by breeding garden peas (pisum salivum) in carefully planned experiments. Many varieties available (mendel collected 34 distinct strains from all over europe) Easy to grow and have a short generation time. Easy to control pollination: can self fertilize, cross-pollination is possible. Character is a specific property of an organism that is inherited. Trait is each variant of a character. Mendel selected 7 contrasting pairs of characters table 14. 1. Mendel applied quantitative methods, not merely description. He used experimental approach: planned experiments, recorded data. He conducted mathematical analysis of results: was first to apply quantitative methods to study inheritance.
