Wednesday, march 30, y lecture 12: endocrine system i ch 40. 1-40. 2, 45. 1. Before we start : remainder of semester- organ systems - focus on humans, 3 points for each. Body plan/ organization is a product of evolution. Intro: a. evolution of animal size and shape. Body size and shape limited by physical laws: strength, diffusion, movement, heat exchange. Example: shape of swimming animals: limited by water, denser and more viscous than air. Streamlined shape: diverse organisms, same environment, convergent evolution- selection favors similar adaption, fig 40. 2, b. Limits body plan: single celled organism. Sa to vol ratio sufficient for all exchange. Works if all cells have access to aqueous environment. Most animals more complex: compact masses of cells, complex organism. Tissue-group of cells with similar tissue and function. 4 main tissue types in animals: epithelial. Wednesday, march 30, y: connective, muscle, nervous. Tissues are organized into organs >different tissues organs into functional unit. Organ systems-more than one organ working together!!!!
