Sdt for osteichthyes swim bladder (lungs) Tissue systems (3 total in plants): (1) dermal tissue system (2) ground tissue system (3) vascular tissue system. Organs comprised of all three tissue systems. Roots (large roots = adaptations in tall plants) Store carbohydrates (and other reserves) ex. carrots, potatoes, radishes, etc. Have root hairs thin, finger-like extensions of root epidermal cells. Not multicellular, found primarily near tip of elongated roots. Function to increase surface area for absorption. Elongate and orient shoot to maximize photosynthesis. Elevate reproductive structure increase pollen and seed dispersal. Green stems carry out limited photosynthesis. Each organ consists of all 3 systems. 1st line of defense against physical damage and pathogens. In nonwoody plant: (1) epidermis single layer of tightly packed cells (2) cuticle waxy coating; helps prevent water loss. Wood plants periderm replaces epidermis in older regions of stems and roots.
