Document Summary
Specific immune response specific to each pathogen. Involves initial (innate) response before adaptive response is fully working. Lymphocytes types of wbcs that originate in bone marrow. T cells finish their development in thymus. Antigen (ag) any foreign substance that elicits a b or t cell response (doesn"t have to be just a virus) Epitope specific region exposed on surface of ag. Specifically binds ag receptor of b or t cells. You need to tell what"s you and what"s foreign. Defense mechanism depends on ability to distinguish self from nonself. Surface proteins differ between individuals of same species. Blood types (2) b and t cell diversity. Generated via genetic recombination and deletion when cells are activated (+ alternative splicing) Specific (3) proliferation of b and t cells. Once activated, multiple cell divisions can have many identical cells. Effector cells work immediately against ag or any pathogen producing ag. Short-lived ex: plasma cells, helper t cells, cytotoxic t cells.
