Metazoa = animals: cell structure and organization. 6 shared derived traist of the metazoa (animals) No cell walls - collagen for support. Cell to defend against invaders, muscle cells, connective cells: reproduction and development. Symmetry = basic pattern of repeated parts. Go from just cells to having cells and tissue. A third tissue layer evolves = more complex: embryonic tissue development. Ancestral = no layers (no layers = no tissues) Middle layer, muscles, skeleton, etc: body cavities. You must be triploblastic to have a coelom. A true coelom is the ancestral trait in most triploblasts. Pseudocoelom : coelom fluid filled -> hydrostatic skeleton. In some taxa a true coelom has evolved into: Protostome development is the ancestral trait of most bilateral organisms. No place to evenly split it without cutting into a cell. Rapid diversification of animals: current animals phylogeny. Metazoa = the animals 6 derived traits. Derived trait, tissues so they had symmetry.
