Document Summary

Topic 15 - reproduction ii: female reproductive system. Ovary = gonads -> house oocytes (oo = egg, cytes = cells) Oviducts (fallopian tubes) - where 2* oocyte moved by cilia. Oocyte = cell that -> meiosis to make egg. Myometrium (myo = muscle) - smooth muscle -> contractions. Cervix - small opening at bottom of uterus. Each primary (1*) oocyte is housed within a follicle (remember many follicles are in each ovary) 1* oocyte is waiting inside the follicle. Each month 6-12 follicles mature - only one of 12 completes cycle: during and after puberty. 2* oocyte ejected through ovary wall and into oviduct (coated in the zona pellucida & follicle cells) This combo prepares the body for pregnancy & prevents another egg release. Prepares for pregnancy: components of menstrual cycle. 28 day cycle - regulated by hormones. Ovaries respond to fsh & lh with 2 hormones: Secreted by follicle cells & corpus luteum.
