Success of plants depends on their ability to gather resources from their environment and transport them to where they are needed. Single layer of cells- fit snugly against each other. Regulates movement of water and minerals into xylem: casparian strip. Band-like region surrounding each cell of endodermis not in cell wall. Vascular cylinder contains xylem and phloem: mycorrhizae (fungi) Indirectly increases surface area of roots for absorption: water potential. Abbreviated by greek letter psi + measured in a unit of pressure called the megapascal (mpa) Free energy of water = amount of e available to do work. Psi= 0 mpa for pure water at sea level and at room temp. Higher psi = more potential energy to perform work when water moves. Psi (water potential) decreases when solutes dissolved in water. Solute molecules and ions bind to h20 molecules. Reduce motion of h20 molecules reduce capacity to do work.
