Fungi and animals evolved from a common flagellated unicellular ancestor and multicellularity arose separately in the two groups. The oldest undisputed fossils of fungi are 400 mya. Hydrolases (breaking down into simple sugars through water or hydrolysis) Heterokaryon- the two nuclei wait and do not fuse. Dikaryotic mycelium- nuclei pair off, two to a cell. # of mating types depend on # of alleles. Two to 10,000 genders can mate with anyone because almost everyone is a different gender. Molecular evidence supports hypothesis that diverged early in fungal evolution. Most decomposers in soil- feed on decaying plant or animal matter.
