Endosymbiosis: relationship between 2 species in which 1 organism lives inside another organism, mitchondria. Mitochondria of protists, animals, fungi, and plants descended from one ancestor: plastids. Excavated feeding groove on one side of cell body. Cannot use oxygen to extract energy from organic molecules. Anaerobic pathway: 2 equal-sized nuclei, multiple flagella. Covered by plasma membrane: many parasites, example. Plankton- diverse group of organism that live in water column. Can"t swim against current: brown algae. Spend portion of life cycle as haploid and diploid. Neurotoxin: kill fish and birds, apicouplexans. Die and form thick marine sediments: cercozoans. Monophyletic group: red alga, green alga, and land plants. Attach to substrates: alteration of generation, ex. Green alga: closely related to land plants. Entamoeba histolytica: lives in intestine, cause amoebic dysentery, opisthokauts. More closely related to fungi than to other protists.
