Document Summary
Lecture 25- blood and immunity (42. 2 and 43. 1: intro, ~5 liters of blood in human body, functions, transport, fluid balance, defense against pathogens, composition cells dispersed in liquid. Serum= plasma minus fibrinogens: materials transported nutrients, wastes, gases, hormones. Elastic internal framework to go through capillaries: mammals no nuclei, lack mitochondria anaerobic metabolism, o2 transport, hemoglobin protein. Gives rbc red color: erythrocyte production is controlled by hormone erythropoietin (epo, kidneys, negative feedback mechanism sensitive to amount of o2 reaching tissues, if not enough o2, kidney is stimulated to produce epo. Bone marrow stimulated to produce rbcs: if too much o2, kidneys are triggered and level of epo reduced decreasing. Rbc production: leukocytes= white blood cells (wbc, defend body against invaders, not confined to circulatory system. Also interstitial fluid and lymph nodes: platelets, not whole cells, formed by pinching off cytoplasmic fragments of large cells in bone marrow, no nuclei, involved in blood clotting.
