When you first put cultures on growth medium, they go through lag phase to adjust to medium (metabolically active, making ribosomes, producing atp) but no increase in cell number. Once cells start growing, they grow exponentially (log phase) 4 8 16. Can have enough cells over time registering how cells were growing. During lag phase, can figure out generation time. Stationary phase - cells are still dividing but also dying -- doing it in equal rates.
