Swelling of brain pressure on skull and brain stem interrupts functions of breathing, basic function etc. Physical pain and rapid beating happens in the heart. Making early connections about brain and body pain. Knowledge that brain and spinal cord are important. Hippocrates: eyes, mouth and ear are very close to the brain. Aristotle: brain was a cooling station that had been overheated by heart. Connection between brain/spinal cord injuries and intellect/body. Fluids control body movements, sight and hearing. Grey matter-dendrites and axon terminals of neurons, no myelin. White matter- connections between different brain areas, axons that are myelinated. Experiments in static electricity and frog dissections. Observes that frog leg muscles contract when static electricity touches them. Concludes that not fluid, but electricity from the brain controls body. Clarity- hydrogel, take away lipids, permeable to color dye. Optogenetics- light sensitive receptors, replicate neuron function with light receptors, insert gene through virus. Arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus- control of appetite.
