Female reproductive system: functions, egg production, receives penis and sperm, nourishes embryo, lactates - long term care. Follicles: where egg will mature and release. Oocytes: cells that undergo meiosis to produce eggs. Collects 2 degree oocyte from ovary -> uterus. Endometrium: connective tissue, glands, blood vessels; lines lumen -> support embryo. Cervix - small opening at bottom of uterus. Oogenesis: prior to puberty, creation of the egg in the embryo. Primordial germ cells (2n) -> mitosis -> oogonium (2n) (figure 46. 11) Oogonium -> mitosis -> 1 degree oocyte (2n) 1 degree oocyte -> meiosis arrests at prophase 1. At birth = 1-2 million 1 degree oocytes. At sexual maturity = 200,000 1 degree oocytes. Each 1 degree oocyte housed within a follicle -> many follicles. Zona pellucida forms between 1 degree oocyte and follicle. Each month 6-12 follicles mature only one completes cycle: 1 degree oocyte completes meiosis 1. 2 degree oocyte released from ovary -> oviduct.
