Document Summary

Sensory information comes in through dorsal side of the spinal cord. It travels up the dorsal column ipsilaterally (same side) synapsing in the dorsal column nuclei in the brain stem area. Then second neuron axon crosses over to the other side of the body travelling up to the vp nucleus in the thalamus it synapses again and the third neuron extents to the primary somatosensory cortex. (3 neurons 2 synapses) Located behind central sulcus in the post central gyrus (parietal lobe). The primary somatosensory cortex can be divided into a few different areas: 3a, 3b, 1 and 2. This is where information from the 3 neuron enters before it is sent to other areas. Running had over area and be able to detect texture. The brain does this by taking in vibration information, the frequency of the vibration is what let"s use determine texture. Area 2 helps detect size and shape of objects.
