Document Summary

The optic nerve (made up of the axons of the ganglion cells) comes out the back of the eye and crosses over at the optic chiasm. Only the nasal side of the optic nerves cross over, the temporal ones do not. Once the nerve passes the chiasm, they are now called the optic tract. The left optic tract will contain the axons from the temporal side of the left eye as well as axons from the nasal side of the right eye. The right optic tract will have the reverse. The left visual field includes vision from the straight ahead (fixation point) and to the left, while the right visual field is from straight ahead and everything to the right. The left visual field goes to the right side of the brain and the right visual field goes to the left side of the brain. Both eyes can see most of the left and right visual fields.
