Intro to parasitology: animal associations, symbiosis, close association of organisms of different species, symbionts 2 different spp that are living in close association. Ex: cattle egrets (birds) & cattle: phoresis = (cid:498)to carry(cid:499) (cid:523)+/0(cid:524) Phorant (smaller of the two) is carried by the host. Ex: flies may carry lice: mutualism (+/+) Obligatory aka a physiological dependence between the two. Ex: termites feed on wood but unable to digest it: within intestines there are intestinal protists which secrete cellulose, enzyme cellulase digests wood, both absolutely need each other to survive, exploitation (+/-) Types: predator and prey, predator kills many organisms, parasitoid, only one host is attacked and killed, ex: wasps, bees, and flies, females wasps will deposit an egg in/on an insect. Egg hatches and a larval parasitoid will develop in or on the insect.
