Document Summary
Chapter 4 visceral protozoa i: rhizopods (amoebae) and cilophorans. There are 8 species of amoebae that are known to parasitize humans: entamoeba histolytic, e. hartmanni, e. dispar, e. coli, e. polecki, e. gingivalis, endolimax nana, and iodamoeba butschlii. They are members of the phylum rhizopoda. E. histolytic is the most severe parasite of this phylum that are parasitic to humans. Nucleus- uninucleate, delicate envelope, chromatin, central endosome: cyst (12 m. 1-4 nuclei: causes amoebic dysentery or amoebiasis. It is not restricted to the tropics/ subtropics. Mode of infection ingestion of cysts from contaminated hands, food, or water: life cycle: trophozoite inhabits the colon, rectum, and sometimes the lower end of the small intestine. it is typically monopodial, producing one large, fingerlike pseudopodium at a time. Trophozoites proliferate using binary fission within the host"s gut. Under adverse circumstances trophozoites assume pre cystic characteristics (more spherical, food vacuoles shrink, pseudopodia are sluggishly extended, no progressive movement).
