Document Summary

Many relevant reactions take place between particles/molecules in solution. Chemical behavior of particles within solution differ from their behavior in pure form. Molecules exhibit im forces that impact their physical properties. Solution is a homogenous mixture two (or more) different substances mixed together. Composed of solute(s) dissolved in a solvent. Solvent is major component of solution, solute is minor component. Solutions can be gaseous, liquid, or solid see table 14. 1 in tb. Solubility amount of a substance that dissolves in a given amount of solvent soluble when one substance (solute) dissolves in another (solvent) ex. Miscible when used when both solute and solvent are liquids. Insoluble when one substance doesn"t dissolve in another ex. oil in water. Immiscible when both solute and solvent are liquids. Whether a substance is soluble in another depends largely on im forces that occur between solute and solvent particles (table 14. 3) Polar and ionic solutes dissolve in polar solvents.
