Document Summary

Linkage isomerism: the metal and ligand and metal can bond in different modes because of the ligand"s characteristic of having more than one donor atoms. Stereoisomers: compounds with the same atomic connections differ in that the ligands are arranged differently around the central atom than each other. Therefore, these compounds would have different chemical and physical properties. Facial (fac) isomer: three identical ligands bind to corners of the octahedron"s triangular face. Meridional (mer) isomer: three ligands bond to the octahedron"s meridian. Called enantiomers, are nonsuperimposiable in that they can never be each other and are the mirror image of each other. Trans isomers are superimposiable, but cis isomers are not superimposiable. Chapter 19 notes started in middle of lecture. Delta g value is positive= non spontaneous. Spontaneous determination needs the background of entropy and enthalpy. Most spontaneous rxns occur from a system of higher potential energy going to a system with a lower potential energy (exothermic rxn)
