Culture characteristics: complex/multifaceted - expectations & norms based on religions, economy, etc, invisible - unspoken cultural rules, subjective - cultural rules/violations are not universal, subject to change - cultural expectations & norms change over time. Persons from high-context cultures (content is less important than context): have an indirect communication style, value politeness, rely on nonverbal, contextual information, are often concerned with face-saving and are unlikely to publicly criticize others. Intercultural communication aspects: communication style expectations, culturally diverse conflict styles, cultural values, languages and code. Phase 1 honeymoon - excited to explore new settings.
