Journalists used to be indifferent to audiences. Gans found that journalists did not care about what the audience wanted. Page views: any time a user views a page by any method. Unique visitors: an individual person who visits a site or uses its mobile app at least once in a specific period of time. Etrics will cause a (cid:324)race to the bottom(cid:325) in journalism. Metrics will make journalism more responsive to audiences and less elitist. Then went to ny times and gawker media. Writers not allowed to see their own analytics. No one is quite sure what these metrics actually mean. Your editor can see your metrics, but youre not able to. Need editors approval and oversight for stories, and must write in nyt style, but no traffic expectations. Your metrics are made public and used to evaluate your job performance.
