Events like this are what led to the grassroots movements to push for regulation and environmental movement. Legislative action was taken in early 1970s. Could not dump human or animal solid waste anywhere bc it was a severe problem. Stil remains a problem around the world bc of animal waste and disease. Helped reduce diseases in this country and others that implemented this. Recognition by the federal government that something needed to be done. Set requirements for additional treatments- higher level of sewage treatment. You can"t just do what you want. Regulates water quality standards for surface water. Much more difficult to identify and control. Infant mortality used to be linked to this before there was immunity to them. Continues to be an issue usually after a storm and massive flooding bc waste water isn"t treated properly. Monitor the water so it doesn"t exceed. Pathogens are still number one pollutant in new jersey.
