Peasants: social and economic reality: community tied to villages and working the land. Whole family works: note: shoes = essential and luxury items for peasants (symbolic) Idea of the barefoot child in perception of what it means to be a peasant. Not big distinction on adult"s and children"s clothes (gentry would have different clothes for school) having an innocent childhood isn"t something part of a peasant community: towards end of 19th there"s rudimentary education in peasant villages. Only truly educated person in a village for the priest for a while, later joined by schoolteacher: family structure is different than from a gentry family. Reading on peasants by hungarian writer: question on how to bring peasants into modern life/society, question on who the typical peasant is/essence of peasant life. Baffled when confronted by people who are their betters/authority figures. Story of peasants putting their hats on the ground when talking to the magistrate .
