Document Summary

Neurons - cells that transfer and process information. Neuroglia - supporting cells that support the neurons. Found in the brain and retina of the eye. Found in the olfactory system; some in retina. Sensory neurons - brings information in; afferent. Visceral sensory neurons - picks up sensation from our visceral systems. Motor neurons - sending the signal out to the effectors; efferent. Somatic motor neurons - affects the skeletal muscles. Visceral motor neurons - affects the organ systems in the body. Interneurons - between neurons; only in the cns. Gray matter - deeper tissue; neurons are housed here. White matter - myelinated; where axons are. Ventral root - efferent root; sending signals to the effectors. Dorsal root is bringing the afferent information. Dura mater - protects the cord; thick outer coating and provides cushioning. Subarachnoid space is where we have spinal fluid. Pia mater - innermost coating; right up against the nervous tissue.
