Geography is the study of the earth as the home of humankind. It provides broad place-centered perspective on the transformation of environments by society and nature at a variety of scales, from the local to the global. Why what is where and so what? . Need measurements systems to quantify scientific processes. Four primary sphere: atmosphere- air , lithosphere- stone , hydrosphere- water , biosphere- life . Formed 4. 5 to 5 billion years ago. Need an accurate location on the earth to describe geographic features. Uses earth"s rotation axis to base location on the surface. Plane of the equator-halfway between poles and perpendicular to earth"s surface.
