Bangladesh one of the poorest countries in asia: and also one of the most exposed to environmental hazards. These processes are related, in a myriad of ways. Environment and development issues are inextricably linked. Bangladesh was part of the raj - the british empire in south asia. When britain gave up its indian colonies in 1947, they divided them along primarily religious lines. India dominated by hindus, pakistan and east pakistan predominantly islamic. State of bengal divided into west bengal (part of india) and east bengal, which became east pakistan. The radcliffe line divided british india based upon religion. Legacy continues through to the present with borders . Bangladesh came into being as a result of seceding from pakistan. However, by this point it had already endured one of the worst disasters in history. Bangladesh is perhaps more vulnerable to cyclones than any other country in the world. Storm surge of 12ft in most places.
