Document Summary

Sedimentary rocks- ro(cid:272)ks for(cid:373)ed at or (cid:374)ear the earth"s surfa(cid:272)e (cid:271)y. Weathering break off and ions are transported. Transportation- wind, water- dominant agent of sediment movement, gravity, ice. Deposition- different depositional environments, travel to ocean, or end up at beach or lake. Regolith- layer of loose rock and mineral fragments. Two types of weathering the process that breaks up rocks into fragments. Physical weathering- takes palce when solid rock is fragmented by mechanical processes that do not change its chemical comp. Chemical weathering- occurs when the minerals in a rock are. Physical weathering- frost wedging- freezing water expands, pressure on cracks, mechanical weathering in temperate environments. Talus slope- pile pf rock at bse of slope. Rock made up of many different minerals- some expand more than others. Exfoliation- large flat or curved sheets of rock fracture and are detached from an outcrop. Physical weathering changes the surface to volume ratio: more surfaces for oxygen to weather.
