Between the years 1830 to 1840, there was an upraise of revolts and escapes of slaves in america. This resulted in a sudden increase of black free laborers. There were many people who believed in equality of all people, hence they were all for this. However, those who were defenders of slavery did not mind this and were persistent with their beliefs and created the. The senator of south caroline, john c. calhoun, comments that slavery was a positive occurrence that was beneficial to all people, including slaves. He continues to comment on how slave labor is greater when compared to wage labor and that the conditions slaves endured were favorable and much better than that of free laborers. It seems as though he believes slavery is better for people than those who are free laborers. There were other high ranking people that were pro-slavery, such as, south carolina governor george duffle.
