Syncopation - created when a beat that is not normally accented is given an accent. Example: adding an accent to the second beat of a quadruple meter, bc you usually only find an accent on the first and third beat. Are meters that can be seen as a duple or triple meter, a common example being meters that have 12 or 6 beats. 12 beat measure is a type of compound meter. Organized into 4 units of 3 beats. Triplet - dividing beats into 3 equal units. Drag triplet - pairs the quarter note with the eighth note on a single beat. Can be grouped to be a triple meter (2 beats grouped into 3) Duple meter (3 groups of 2 beats) Defined as durations of each individual event in a musical structure and the patterns the durations create. Occurs independent of pitch, harmony, and timbre, but not from meter.
