A lot of hillbilly music was inspired by real life events (usually tragic events) Vernon dalhart was the first popular hillbilly artist. Majority of hillbilly music was produced in large urban centers such as new york or atlanta. Blind lemon jefferson was a rural singer and was brought in by paramount. He would perform in street corners of dallas. The focus on a male singer accompanied by a guitar and him telling a personal story (which ends up being about heartache) -- a model for the first rock n roll artists.
