Rap is a form of music that came from the hip hop culture. Hip-hop is a lifestyle with its own language, dress code, etc. In other words, rap is something you do and hip hop is something you live. African americans still experienced hard times despite the civil rights movements of the 1960"s. By 1980 more than 31% of african american"s lived in poverty, three times more than the number of whites. By 1986 14% of african american families earned less than 5,000 a year, compared to 9. 6% in 1970. More than 30% had income of less than ,000 a year. African american teens were especially confronted with these high unemployment numbers in hard times. In 1987: 34% of african american teens were unemployed compared to 17% of white teens. More than 21% of african americans between the ages of 20-24 could not find jobs, compared to less than 10% of their white counterparts.
