African americans still experienced hard times despite the civil rights movements of the 1960"s. By 1980 more than 31% of african american"s lived in poverty, three times more than the number of whites. By 1986 14% of african american families earned less than 5,000 a year, compared to 9. 6% in 1970. More than 30% had income of less than ,000 a year. African american teens were especially confronted with these high unemployment numbers in hard times. In 1987: 34% of african american teens were unemployed compared to 17% of white teens. More than 21% of african americans between the ages of 20-24 could not find jobs, compared to less than 10% of their white counterparts.
