Document Summary
Anemia: clinical manifestation of a decrease in circulating rbc mass. Clinical manifestations: weakness, fatigue, or feeling tired, headaches, problems with concentration, paleness, dizziness, difficulty breathing or sob, chest pain, loss of libido. Anemia diagnosis: men: hb <13 g/dl, women: hb <12 g/dl. Treatment: generally initiated when hb <10 g/dl, consider reducing therapy when hb levels are between 11-11. 5 g/dl, target hb levels >13 have been associated with negative outcomes. Frequent lab testing that requires blood samples: blood clotting impairment in ckd leads to increased blood loss during injury or sample collection, unavoidable blood loss in the dialyzer and tubing during hemodialysis. Hemolysis during hemodialysis: hemolysis: rupture of rbcs and release of their content, due to kinked blood line tubing, blood pump occlusion or catheter malfunction. Reduced rbc survival time: 30-70% reduction in in patients with ckd: exact mechanism unknown but thought to be associated with loss of rbc surface lipids due to uremia.
