Document Summary

Thrombosis in the arterial system: arterial thrombi cause serious conditions through localized occlusive ischemia. Examples: myocardial infarction (mi), ischemic stroke: venous thrombi fragments give rise to pleural embolic complications. Examples: pulmonary embolism (pe), deep vein thrombosis (dvt) Endothelial injury: triggers activation of coagulation pathway and platelet aggregation. Stasis - stagnation in blood flow due to cardiac dysfunction (hf, af, etc) or vessel obstruction, e. g. , varicose vein. Due to formation of a thrombus within an artery. In most cases, arterial thrombosis follows rupture of atheroma, and is therefore referred to as atherothrombosis. Coronary arterial thrombosis can lead to heart attack (mi). Atrial fibrillation (af) can cause blood stasis within the atrium. Clot gets pushed out into the artery by the ventricles and from there to aorta and its branches causing arterial embolism: stroke. Ischemic strokes are caused by interruption of the blood supply due to vessel blockage by a thrombus or embolus. Af is a leading cause of ischemic stroke.
