01:730:103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Rationality, Basic Belief
Document Summary
Voltaire disagrees with the social contracting of believing in a god and possibly losing the bet of religion. Pascal"s conclusion is irrational, in that it is asking oe to believe in something they know does not exist. Voltaire"s position and this idea cannot be reconciled with unless. Pascal only agrees that god exists and can only benefit if he does exist, not whether he does or doesn"t. Individuals cannot think on a sufficient evidence basis unless, as the rules exception, they never ever had interactions or could connect with others. I cannot give any examples of things like this, since they hopefully have never happened. If the said religious individual follows the stated claims necessary, then it would obey the given theory. However, logically, he probably would not want this to be justified, since his kind of religion is one that is positive and mentally empowering to the user, not being destructive.
