01:750:109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Dailymotion, Leap Year, Middle Latitudes
Document Summary
Rotation of earth affect view of sky at night. Star is in the same place, but we are looking at it from a different angle. Change point of view so you remain looking at it. Might get below horizon just in time for sun to rise in the east. See objects in sky moving from east to west because of rotation of earth. From one night to the next, view of sky will be slightly different. Nightly motion (rotation) and daily motion (revolution) of stars from east to west. Visible at night during certain months and not others. Withhold that quarter of a day for 3 years and then add on 4th. Not quite good, don"t end up in same place every year (fraction of a quarter of a day) Not a problem within our lifetime, but then there becomes a problem. 2000 was a leap year, but not 1900 or 1800.
