India has (except for 2 years) has been a democracy. It can be viewed as a relatively successful democracy. Political struggles in poor democracies are especially likely to be contentious: many of these struggles can fall along barriers of ethnicity, religion, language, caste, or territorial attachment. Attempts to satisfy demands of the mobilized groups could lead to nationalistic and often divisive outcomes. India"s democratic resilience because of, or in spite of, these challenges.
