Realism: international system is anarchic and the only survival is guaranteed by power which is the ultimate national interest: power: motivates states behavior, hobbes, george kennan. Interest of self restraint; contain and deter rather than to eliminate: avoid overreaching, examples, kennan-containment policy, eisenhower, kissinger. Are dominant traditions fading and being replaced: obama -- us should participate abroad. Intrinsically benign (obama/clinton: relatively benign (trump, better than all available alternatives, quality of a benign gemon matters. Aggressive hegemon: trump- retreating and the rest of the world be damned, forcing itself on everybody, bush - forcing other states to be free. 1959 open door expansionism: native americans, mexican american war, manifest destiny, universal way of life. Political will: does the us want to be an international leader (responsibility): what are you going to do with your power, sustain global economy, burden of leadership.
