A well run experiment allows one to draw causal conclusions. Only form of research where you can do this. A case study is an in-depth and generally highly subjective or impressionistic report on a single individual (or very small group of individuals) that may be based on interviews, psychological testing, and so on. Detailed case histories are worked up for youngsters referred to counseling because of excessive aggressive behavior in school. The children are interviewed, as are their parents and teachers. Interviewing different people about experiences helps reinforce truth, check for consistency and patterns in subject"s behavior. Can"t conclude that the results of a case study apply to everyone: very limited.
